Big Box Retailing

Pepperwood Grove wines from Sonoma, Calif.-based Don Sebastiani & Sons now come in a new 3-liter box as well as bottles. Acting on research that found consumers were hesitant to buy 3-liter boxes because they didn’t see a brand they liked, or knew, available at retail, as well as the perception that standard 750-milliliter or 1.5-liter bottled varietal wines were of better overall quality than box wines, the company designed the Pepperwood Grove Big Green Box to address both issues with a product from a long-established brand respected for its quality-to-price ratio. As its name and color would suggest, the packaging is also green in the environmentally friendly sense. The 100 percent recyclable box is light and compact, using less fossil fuel in transport, and is printed on paper sourced from sustainable forests. Once opened, the wine will stay fresh in the refrigerator for as long as a month. Offering such varietals as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Big Green Box retails for a suggested $19.99. To learn more, visit www.donandsons.com/.
