Fleming Opens South Brunswick Distribution Center

Fleming announced on Wednesday the successful opening and initiation of service from its newest distribution center in South Brunswick, N.J. This 540,000 square foot facility, located at exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike, is ideally suited to serve stores up and down the I-95 corridor.

"Our new South Brunswick facility is state-of-the-art all the way," said Bill Merrigan, senior vice president, logistics for Fleming. "With a total of 114 doors -- 57 on each side of the warehouse -- this warehouse is optimally planned for speed, productivity, and efficiency. Warehoused inventory is set up in family groups to minimize slotting and picking time, and forklift routing is controlled by radio frequency communications systems. It has also been set up to handle flow-through operations, a tremendous efficiency-builder in our business."

The warehouse is initially slated to handle $600 million per year in annual dry grocery volume. Long-term, the warehouse has an engineered capacity of more than two times that volume, allowing for growth in the current business as well as the addition of new customers. Adjacent facilities and parcels allow for continued future growth and the addition of other categories, such as frozen foods and produce.
